M38A1 restoration "do this while it's out" list

Post by rapid »

55 M38A1: (for willysmjeeps and g503 forums) Just removed eng/tranny/transfer unit on a ground up restoration. While I have it out and everything is accessible, am wondering about a "be sure and do this while it's out" list from you folks that have so much experience. She started, ran, and shifted fine but can't tell about leaks since there was/is so much crud. Tub shot; repo tub probably. Frame is solid just needing major cleaning and s/blasting. My primary concern is w/ eng/tranny/transfer; all input appreciated and thanks in advance. Russell.

If you have them out. I would go through them and make sure all the gears, etc. are in good shape and replace all the seals.

Mine ran fine, but when I looked into the transmission, a couple of gears had chipped teeth, so I went through it an replaced anything that might cause trouble in the future.

I would recommend running the brake lines , wiring harness, master cyclinder and rock guard...Makes finishing the rest easy if your not on your back...
