Installing a Slave unit in a late M38

Anyone per chance have a picture of a slave unit installed in an M38? I checked the downloads and gallery to no joy.

Basically where do the wires go and how are they routed.

Sorry Ryan, the 24V auxiliary unit that mounts on the passenger side fender. I have the wired unit and mounting bracket. I believe one wire goes to the starter (not exactly sure where) and one goes to ground.

I thought I had a pic of this, but I cannot find it.

Hey,

One goes to the starter terminal (the outside one) and the other was the ground - on the fender if I remember correctly off the top of my head.

The wires on mine are long enough to attach the positive cable to the starter where the battery cable attaches and the negative to the engine/starter bracket. That provides the best ground if you have the engine properly grounded. I don't think attaching the ground side to the fender would give you a satifactory ground unless you had the fender grounded to the frame or to the battery negative with the correct size cable/wire. However that is my opinion.

I seen a m38 for sale today on ebay for "buy it now for 45,000" and in its pictures you could see the slave cable wiring a little bit. good luck.

Hey,

Ken is right, it should ground to the front of the starter at the front starter bracket to the engine.

45,000 seems a lot for a jeep...

The early M38's that left Willys with the slave receptacle kit installed had the short positive wire connected to the same terminal on the starter mounted switch that the positive battery cable fastened to. The longer neg cable was bolted to the small "L" shaped bracket that supports the front end of the starter. This cable had two clamps that secured it to the fender.

Those later M38's that left Willys without the slave cable receptacle often had the kit added in the field. There were some variations in the field installations. Some attached the positive cable to the cowl battery positive terminal and the neg cable to the voltage regulator mount brackets grounding area. Some followed the factory set-up.

These schematics are often misleading like this one. They are meant to show the electrical system layout of components relative electrically to each other. They are not meant to show physical location of items.

Here you can see the two cables parallel each other down the fender and across to the front end of the starter where they split with neg going tot he front starter support barcket and the pos going to the starter switch.
