Throtle handle verbage

Post by 52M38 »

The letters on my handle has letters that ,if you turn the handle points up and down, read vertical instead of horizontal. Is this correct or is it for a different modle truck ? All the ones I see are horizontal. Thanks. Brett

Hi Brett

I think none of the T-shaped handles are correct for the M38. The operating instructions in TM 9-804 clearly shows a round throttle knob like the choke knob. In the later TM 9-8012 it doesn't show clearly.

Unless there was a change in preproduction that someone can confirm, I'd say the round knob is correct.

The TM 9-804 is dated Sep 1950. The TM 9-8012 is dated Jan 1956.
The 804 figure is clearly a round knob although the bezel is different from the choke. In my opinion the 8012 figure shows the clearly round choke knob but it is clear to me that whatever the throttle is it is not round.

The M38 supply manuals are ORD 9 SNL G-740 dated Nov 1951 and ORD 9 SNL G-740 dated Sep 1955 and ORD * SNL G-740 Dated Jun 1956.

The ORD 9 part number for the throttle control remains the same in both ORD 9's and the ORD 8 WO# 801683.

I personally feel the M38 left Willys with round knobs on both the choke and throttle through it's entire production run. I also feel the only real difference with the M38A1 throttle control was it is longer and had a "T" handle. For this reason I believe when the round knob became unavailable the using units substituted the "T" handle M38A1 control and shortened it to fit the M38. I cannot account for the odd shape in the TM 9-8012 figure but it may be just terribly blurred. If that figure is really a "T" handle then it is possible the Army superseded the round knob just after the 56 ORD 8 went to press and before the 8012 went to press. Since these manuals are different category IE maintenance vs supply I would ignore the dating differences for this hypothesis.

Willys records indicate the throttle was always a "T" handle except for the pilot models. "Throttle" lettering is horizontal (from left to right).

I am not up on the M38A1, but I thought it had the "T" handle with the veritcal letterint (up to down).

The problem with using the Ord # or Ord Stk # or FSN or NSN to determine a parts factory originality is that in the Army the ORD # on the box means nothing about the true origin of the original designed part. The Ord# represents any part that meets the Army's spec for the part made by any approved vendor. There are hundreds of examples of this throughout the Army's jeep use history. The manufacturers name and part number is needed to accurately determine if the part is of the original design and then the manufacturer's drawings will need to be referenced to determine if and when any changes were approved for the part.

I assume we have factory data here someplace that supports all knobs being "T" type except for the pilot models and all lettering being as noted?
