Broken valve spring

Post by Scott21 »

Went to adjust my tappy valve and low and behold the spring is broken. Has anyone replaced a valve spring with the motor together?? Not that its hard to do, but, do I have to pull the head? The only guide I have is TM9 1804a which is a total rebuild. Looking for any advice or tricks. everything else is fine. She runs good but the broken spring slapps.

It's just as it is done in the TM. The only trick is keeping the valve down tight without the head off. You can try pumping about 80 pounds of air in the cylinder as if you were doing a leak down test and it should hold. A pair of needle nose vice grips can also be used to hold the valve shaft still while you push the retainer up and remove the locks.

Spring is in. I had to pull the head, the retainer was on tight after 57 years. Head gasket should be here tomorow!!
