Ok next weekend I will be installing a bunch of new steering parts in my m38. What is a quick and diry way of getting the alignment close?

The quick and dirty can't be determined until we know which parts are being replaced. The only information not very clear in the manual is the tie rod installations and how to initially set the lengths. Easiest is to measure distances from centers first then change the parts and set new rods to same length.
The only steering alignmnt function you can perform is the toe-in/out checks and they are very clearly explained in the manuals as well.

The problem with TM 9-8012 and TM 9-804 and TM 9-1804B are they scatter the procedure too much. You have to hunt and peck for it. The civvy manual SM1002 is a lot easier to follow.
