M38 Gas cap gasket. Found on eBay. Results

I need a new gasket for the gas cap on our M38. I've checked
with John, no luck. The lady at NAPA said that's what she
needed today, another challenge. No joy. We have both NAPA
and Autozone here; if anyone has the part number(s) it would
be a great help. Thanks for your help.

I see them listed on ebay and jeep supply companys for $16.00. Are you kidding me, for a stupid rubber gasket!!!! You are better off cutting one out of a sheet of cork gasket material that you get at an auto supply.

What do you suggest Wes?

I have purchased some rubber gaskets. I haven't found a good rubber gasket that will tolerate gasoline though.

I would like to know how the one's from Franks hold up when you can determine the quality after a while.

The gaskets arrived from Frank's Surplus in about a week.
They were soft and flexible as advertised. Each was not as
thick as the (supposed) original, and both were too thick. It
may be that the brass spring for the gasket in the cap has
weakened some since 1951. So, I went to NAPA and purchased
the FEL-PRO Sealing Material 4-piece assortment pack, #3060,
and cut a ring from the cork material just a bit thinner than the
new gasket, installed it under the gasket, and the cap is now
tight. I'll try it out later on some curves and see if fuel still
leaks out. Cost of the FEL-PRO was $8.40 with Arkansas taxes.
(Taxes change here every quarter-mile, depending on what
you're purchasing). Cost of the M38 Gaskets was $9.95 including
shipping. Aside to Ken: We'll see how it goes.

Took the Willys out yesterday and drove it around the
same curves at the same speed with a 3/4 full tank of
gas. No leakage occured. The problem may be fixed.
