Rust in Diferencial casing

Post by davem201m38 »

Hi all,
I pulled my front diff cover to find the right hand bearing cap and upper indsides of the diff cover coated in furry rust, a kind of mouldy Iron Oxide!, I run free wheel hubs so the the diff hadn't been turned for a while.

The oil wasn't as nice as 3 years ago when it went in fresh, but there didn't seem to be any water contamination in that oil.

I suspect the breather valve has been letting moisture in but not out?

Any other ideas greatfully recieved.

has anybody got a digram of the insides of the breather valve?

Thanks,
Dave.

Dave,

That breather valve is flat piece of metal with a spring on it. Look in the last Army Motors Magazine article on the M38 fording system.
