I need to order a part and I'm trying to narrow down the serial number of one of my M38s.
The title and VIN plate (a repro) list it as MC95863 which is probably the original motor number. The vehicle now has as RMC motor (#81919).
Would an M38 with the motor number MC 95863 most likely be a 1951 or a 1952 (if this is the original motor)? And would this make it's manufacture before or after model number 44029.
Thanks.
Jack

Hello Jack,
Original motor data is very slim for the M38's. If that 95xxx engine was really the original engine in your M38 then in all liklihood your M38 would be a very late unit. Probably in the April/May 52 range.

Did you have the closed nose late or open nosed early starter?
Did you have any circuit breakers?
Have you looked for the date codes on the tranny, diffs, starter, generator, regulator and distributor?

M38 Year?
Starter is closed nose 12 volt - not from an M38 or maybe not a Willys.
No circuit breakers, wiring or gauges came with the Jeep.
Differentials are not from an M38. Both are from earlier models.
Haven't checked for a tranny date.
Generator is 12 volt and came from a Chrysler.
Regulator is after market.
Distributor is a 12 volt.
Not much M38 left except for the body motor and transmission/TC.
