Why is the rear seat almost always missing?

Do people just want more cargo room?

Or were they removed while in the military?

Very few were used as people transport towards the end of their useful military life and most civilians bought them at surplus for hunting cabins, snow plowing and around the farm with more need to have cargo space then people seats.

My '53 A1 had a rear seat, but it wasn't the original one. At some point the original was replaced with what appears to be a bullet-riddled m151 rear seat and some plywood. They did manage to cover it with canvas.

From what I was told, this jeep had never been modified in any way while in civilian ownership. It really looks like motorpool went out to the firing range and just found a replacement seat.

I've always been under the impression that rear seats weren't very popular in the military, either. Especially on base/depot jeeps. There's probably a pile of old rear seats sitting somewhere at a depot right now.
