Transmission Cover Plates

I was trying to find some posts on what to put down between the transmission covers and the floor.

I think originally they used some kind of black rope type caulk?

Should I not use anything since I am not going fording?

What are some suggestions?

If you have an ACE hardware store near you, go to the insulation weatherproof section and look for what they call Rope Caulk Weatherstrip. It comes in a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" box and is a gray caulk. ACE part number 52515, there is 30 feet in the roll, in 4 seams that run side by side...

Tear off one seam apply to the floor and tighten down...

Nearest thing to original I can find, maybe was original who knows... This is what I found on mine when I took it apart...

SEAL, strip type, 3/16 in diam bead x 80 ft lg (used
w/PLATES, G740-7395158, G740-7697523, and G740-
7697526 and COVERS, G740-7697422, and G740-
7697578)

After I put this stuff on how easy is it to pull up the cover to do work?

Can I just bolt the cover back on after working or is it a mess?

You just pry it loose with a screw driver and some of the bead stays on the floor and some will stick to the panel but it is still in the form of a flattened bead and poses no significant problems.
