Lite switch ????

There were three different switches on the M38. Will the first type with two plugs on the back work with the later(last) wire harness? My serial # 62371 calls for the second type.The first and second type both have that triangle front where the levers are.I can make mine look correct with the first type switch if it will work with my later wiring harness?? Reason ?, I have one! Is this clear as mud yet? I would rather have the second type(triangle on front,one plug on back). If anyone has a GOOD (for sure) one,I am interested. I hope some one could advise me on this. You Guys are Great! thanks,

I was in the same situation as you. I have a '50 M38 and it came as a basket case with a harness that was shot but a serviceable 2-connector switch. At the 2006 Dayton Nationals I was informed by several that the best way to proceed with my new harness (that only allowed for one connector) would be to buy a new switch of the later design. Works fine for me, but I still have the old 2-connector switch as surplus. The alternative (I think) is to have a custom harness made to accommodate your switch. I went the cheaper and more expedient route, but it is not precisely correct for my Jeep. Several dealers carry the newer switch. As far as I know, you can't use the old switch on the newer design harness.

Stir-Stick The two plug switch will work just fine without using a second plug. All the second plug does is replicate a set of rear wires for the direct harness to the trailer plug receptacle.

You answered my question!!! As long as someone doesn't look under my dash,until I find the second type, I will appear politically correct. Is there a plug or cover I could cover that extra hole with? Are these type switches repairable? If you look closely at your M38 ORD 9 you'll see the two Bendix light switches are completely broken down showing all internal parts but the late single plug switch is not. TM 9-1825E covers their rebuild and specs completely. I'm working on a PDF copy of this TM which is very rare. The one I have I ordered from a museum in Holland.

Yes there is a blind Threaded cap for that plug when it is not used.

My 1955 Ord9 only shows the two plug switch broken down,but they are probably similar . I'm looking forward to seeing that manuel from Holland. I'll check around for that cap to blank off the extra hole.Its good to know about these lite switches.

You are correct. Items RR, SS and TT are simply not used on the later Bendix switch. You should be able to come with a part number for the dust cap in a ORD 9 for a 1950 thru 1953 vehicle that did not have the trailer light receptacle in the rear. I had one of those two plug switches laying here somewhere that had a dust cap on the smaller 5 pin receptacle and the dust cap had a small chain that fastened to one of the four mounting screws for the receptacle. The early M37's used these switches also.

Thanks for the info. It's hard to know what intel is good and what isn't when it comes from a stranger who sounds like he knows. He wasn't even a vendor. Anyway, I have had the new switch 3+ years now and it works fine. I can keep the old switch as a spare, strip/paint and install it or sell it.
