Help with T90 gasket set

I know where the gaskets go but my question is why did I get two of the same gaskets for the front bearing cover? One is gray and the other is tan and their serial numbers are off by one and they list the color on the packet (gray & tan). They seem like they they are made of different materials. Which one do I use?

According to the M38 IPL and the M38A1 IPL and the civilian CJ IPL the correct front bearing retainer gasket is Part # 640425 which is a large square shaped gasket that not only seals the round front bearing retainer cover but also provides the water proof seal between the front face of the tranny case and the bell housing..

Those two round gaskets you have 640423 and 640424 do not show up in any universal jeep IPL's.

Those numbers are old an new Omix-ADA part numbers. They won’t cross reference to any Willys number.

Both the tan and gray should be the same. If when you lay them on top of each other they are the same shape and thickness, I would use the one that seems stronger or dense. That one would resist oil better.

Since I like to worry about leaks I put a thin layer of Permatex, (the one that stays pliable), on both surfaces of the gasket.

The 18880.39 and 18880.38 are Omix numbers but look closely below them are the Willys numbers 640424 and 640423 which I believe are for the civvy T90. The large 640425 gasket that seals both the tranny to the bell and the front bearing retainer to the tranny is correct for the military T90. Yes the other two will work. I would use the one with the least amount of compressability. The thicker gaskets will shrink in time and leak. Make sure you have the bearing installed correctly with it's retainer ring and oil slinger if you don't want her to leak.

I'm changing the gasket because I noticed a leak and wanted to change the felt seal. When I took the bearing retainer off it had no gasket, just some RTV. I'm amazed that stuff didn't get into the oil passage hole that oils the front bearing. Anyway, I'm going to use a tiny bit of high tack. I like that stuff because it's non hardening, spreads thin and it sticks well. Permatex #2 is good to but I use it where the mating surfaces aren't as flush.

So the retaining ring is already in place and but I'm not sure what the oil slinger is.

It's the large flat washer #7 in the photo below behind the bearing.
