Front axle's

Post by Stir-stick »

I hope this is't a stupid Question  . I am thinking about changeing from Bendix type to Rzeppa type axle shafts. The shafts are N.O.S. WW 2 type with thread on out bound end. Will these work on an M38? If so , what do I have to do to make them correct? Do I shim, or cut the threads off? Is there anything else I would need to consider  ? Just wondering??? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, STICK

They will work with the threaded end or without. Just follow the directions in the civilian service manual SM-1002 Chapter M pages 203 through 212.

Front axles

Thanks Wesk, I will continue to read up on the information you put me onto. So far it seems as long as I have the flanged bushing and thrust washer, without shims,it will work , or I can still do it the old way , by ckecking runout and using the shims and nut.Has anyone out there used the early axles in the M38? Thanks STICK

For me to have given you a specific answer I would have had to do what you just did. Read those four pages just to be sure.

I prefer the Rzeppa joint because it has the ball cage, and the better steering angle (23 deg for Bendix, 29 Deg for Rzeppa and 27 1/2 deg for cardon spicer.) If you drive in the woods a lot or plow snow the Rzeppa is the way to go.

When I pulled the Bendix Axle on the driver side, it fell apart, balls went everwhere. I done some horse trading for these Rezzepa's. Not much snow here in southern Texas (South of Mason Dixon), and will never see the woods (In my Life).Glad to hear they are the better choice. Thanks Wesk. STICK
