M38A1 fuel pump primer lever

Post by swat »

While surfing the internet I saw a reference to a manual primer lever on the M38A1 fuel pump. Is this a built in lever or must it be inserted? Is this feature also foud on the M38 fuel pump? Anyone have a picture of a pump with this device?

Lever

The silver bar that ends towards the exhaust pipe is the lever and it is built in. There are other pumps that look the same but do not have the primer.

Primer is a bad choice of wording for the lever because it doesn't prime the engine for starting. It only allows you to fill the carb bowl then start the engine. It comes in handy when the jeep sits for long periods. The pump is otherwise the same as all the M38/M38A1/M170 fuel pumps. They all can be used in any of the three jeeps.

The real engine primer for starting purposes is the hand pump cylinder that mounts on the dash. This primer squirts gas directly into the intake manifold.
