M38 Manual Lockout

Hi fellas, after researching ebay and finding that every add is different. What manual lockout hubs can i get for my m38 so that i can save any un needed wear and tear on my front driveline.

Hi...there are a few different types...I think most use the Warn ones, as, if you buy new(I didn't), the premium types still look very similar to the ones used back when the jeep was new...I have Selectro heavy duty models on mine, but I also like the original old Warns...be prepared to pay a bit, on ebay or elsewhere for these...if you have the original front axle parts on yours, you need to look for a 10 spline hub set, external flange mount, using six bolts...hopefully this helps, bud...Wilf

They are nice to have. Very early jeeps (WWII and early CJ) used front outboard axles with threaded ends. These use a different model hub. CJ3A/M38 and up thru about 1968 use the same hubs for snap ring type axles and 10 spline.

If you have the early axles with threaded ends you won't find new hubs to fit. You'll have to find used old style hubs or saw off the threaded tip.

Did the military every install them? and if so what models did they use?

Occasionally you'll see a period photo of a military unit with them. The military had an MWO and a kit for installing a special drive flange that had a smooth bearing in it for the axle tip to just spin in.

Original drive plate on the left with the splines and the kit drive plate on the right that used the bearing.

Wes, Any recomendations on how to cut this threaded portion off if i have the old style axels?

I would not cut the threaded portion off. This will result in wear issues with the axle. If I could not obtain the correct old style hubs I would update the axles to the later un-threaded type.

I have International brand hubs on my M38.......they are basically Warn hubs with the IH logo....

On either vehicle the considerations are the same. Early threaded axle ends use a different height hub then the late snap ring top axle ends. Earl 10 spline and late 19 spline use different hubs. So if the spline count and the axle tip configuration is the same then yes they will fit.

Finally got around to looking real close at my lockouts on my 1950 M38.
The tag says POWER-LOCK-HUB CUTLAS TOOL and MFG. Co. LYONS.Ill.
Anybody familiar with these? They have two coin slots on each hub to engage and seem to operate smoothly. The only problen I've had is they are a few thousandths too big and I can't slide the drums off without removing the hubs.
