m38a1 batterybox

Post by scar »

is the battery box welded in or is it bolted. if it is welded how do you get it out?

Not sure on the M-38A1; but the M-38 battery box in the cowl is welded at teh top with spot welds. If the M-38A1 is the same you will need to drill out those and proceed from there.

After removing those welds the rest of the box came out after removing lots of screws and bolts for the various brackets and covers. I am talking M-38, but I bet the A1 isn't much different.

Hope this helps...

Scar,
The A1 welds and bolts in the same as the M38.

It's up to you. You can buy the expensive tooling or just buy a good center punch and quality hardened drill bits.

I was going to buy a spot weld cutter, but went the drill bit route was a lot cheaper. Worked just fine.

Better be nice to the old box. I haven't seen a repops around. You'll probably need to take it to a local steel fabrication shop and have it repaired or copied.

Wes, I saw this the other day, and I have no idea if it's right-wrong, good-bad, or what.. But I wanted to (try) help if I could.

Well, I'll be! And right here in Wisconsin. I talked to those guys at Iola last year and they said they had several M series irons in the fire. They were displaying some real nice floor panels and hat channels.

Wes,

Those are the folks that I asked you about in an email... I bought my hat channels from them and they fit like a glove. Nice and clean to...

They even put a piece of tubing in where the bolts go thru for reinforcement...

I would buy frm them again... now it someone would make a M-38 under the hood box that did not cost an arm and a leg...

Also suggestion on the battery boxes... Mine came from a take off M-38. It had roofing tar (kind that hardens) coated all over the interior of the box and bracket... It was in fantastic shape.

Hope this helps...
