lettering on wheels

While cleaning the paint off the wheels on my M38, I got down to the O.D. and found yellow block letters that were 1 inch tall. The letters were 70G52\, but I am not sure what the first and last letters actually are. was that perhaps a local motor pool procedure, or did some military units put identification on the wheels? My jeep is a Feb 1952 SN MC56266

Take a look at the next to the last photo in my album (DC Carpenter) All five of my wheels had a number stenciled on them, in yellow, approximately 1".

Thanks Dave, did all of your wheels have the same number? Could this be the same as the hood number? - Hugh

It could but there are no USA hood numbers on M38's in that range.

Your 70G52XXX could also be a hood number but it wouldn't be an M38A1 or M170 but it could be a M606A2 or A3 (militarized CJ5).

I too found yellow lettering on one of my wheels. (My wheels came from many different vehicles as my originals had long since been replaced for converting the Jeep to a rock crawler). I slowed down my paint removal and carefully cleaned around the letters until I could read them. They said M38A1! Probably a salvage yard's ID markings.

All five had the same number. My 38A1 is a USAF jeep, for what that is worth.
