Rear pinion seal

Would any one know the part number for the rear axle pinion seal on a 1952 M38? Thanks for any help.

My handy dandy Ord 9 manual shows two pinion seals.....a felt one...7032634...WO-802563....with a 1.562 ID....a 2.016 OD....by .250 thick. And an oil seal....500071....WO-639265....that is 1 9/16 x 3.165 x 19/32......and is Type MLS. Hope that helps.

The National # is 5778 and don't forget the felt wiper.

Is that why my newly installed pinion seal is weeping? There wasn't a felt when I took it apart and yes I sealed the splines. Will it hurt the seal to pull the yoke and add a felt now?

The felt seal is there to capture the dirt and prevent the dirt from contacting the seal lip. It should be lightly oiled when it is installed. If you installed your seal correctly, there was no wear groove in the yoke then it shouldn't leak. If there is a noticeable wear groove in the yoke you will need to install a Redi-sleeve on it. It will do no harm to remove and re-install the yoke as long as you keep everything clean and lube the yoke before you re-install it.

Yup did the speedi-sleeve thing so next go around I'll have to put the felt in. Is there supposed to be one on the front pinion also? I did put the felts on the transfer case yokes since they came in the gasket set.

ORD 9 shows one on each. You can download the ORD 9 free here. When you use a redi-sleeve and an original size seal make darn sure you remove any sharp edges from the sleeve before you shove that yoke through the now tighter fitting seal.

Smooth as a baby's behind and with a coat of oil. I guess I thought I knew too much didn't look at the book and it didn't have an old felt in there to clue me in. Heck it's only a pinion seal. I don't need no stinkin' book.
