1952 M38 overdrive question ????

Post by Smittykid »

I'm looking at a 52 M38 that has been partially restored (85-90%) It retains the 24 volt elec. system. It also has an overdrive unit installed. My question is this- did any M38's come with overdrive? I'm thinking not. If they did not - how would having an overdrive (assuming it works) affect the overall restored value on the Jeep (pos or neg)? Thanks, Smittykid

hellos Smitty,
No, the M38, or any mil Willys came with an overdrive unit.
I suspect the installed unit on the vehicle is a "Warn", Saturn, or Husky if it appears to be mounted from the input port of the transfer case. There is a Borg/ Warner model that (vaguely recall) attaches directly to the trans t 90.

If you possess the aforementioned Warn,Saturn, they fetch up to 500. used and in good working order. A new Saturn unit will run you 1200. Hence, you have a hefty trade credit towards resto parts in the future.

I'd ask if you intend to run/enjoy the M38 or leave it garaged once you have it all restored. the "added value" is the o/d makes a remarkable bolt on improvement towards drivability of the M38 and reduces high rpm wear should you dare to take her on highways.
For the scrutiny of being judged, it is an easy removal and re-install if you wish.
Personally I adore when a gal comes and asks what the extra stick for?

overdrive ???

I didn't think so. I would probably us it as a driver & the overdrive would be nice on the road. I now have a 52 CJ3A and if I get a good tail wind and pedal fst enough-I can get her up to 45MPH. Thanks for your input. Smittykid

M38 O/D

Post by captw »

in my 1952 M38CDN, I installed a rebuilt Warn front shift O/D which I purchased from Herm Tilford, 3 years ago...I am VERY impressed with how it operates, both on and off road...the jeep was driven previously on the highway at speeds of 50 mph +, but now I don't have the need to carry a catcher's mitt with me...I've driven the jeep on trips up to 400 miles return, at highway speeds of 50>55 mph...I think my fuel economy is better also...Wilf

as an addendum to my previous post...a few folks had told me I was wasting my time installing an O/D, saying the L134 is too anemic at 60hp to drive at highway speeds in O/D...I'm pleased to say that is not the case, and if I can get a good run at a grade, the jeep usually doesn't need to be shifted back into 3rd direct...p.s. I also have Selectro hubs HD unlock hubs on the front axle, and a PowerTrax locking diff. in the rear axle...I love driving my jeep...Wilf
