Electric wiper motor

Post by Beacher425 »

Has anyone swapped out the vacuum wiper motors with the electric motors? I am working on a M38A1 and have one of the motors with the wiring instructions but no fitting instructions and can find no pictures of the motor installed on the upper windshield of a M38A1 or CJ5.

Thanks

I hope your motor has the arm and blade with it. Many of the off shore kits offer no replacements or are extremely hard to match. You usually just stick the main drive shaft thru the existing drive shaft hole and if the additional holes do not line up then drill new ones. Some motors require enlarging the center hole and some only use one of the side holes and some require a bushing in the center hole and some require spacers for the one or all three holes.

The only reason I can see for switching to electric is because you no longer have a dual fuel/vacuum pump. Otherwise proper care and maintenance of the vac wiper system yields excellant service from them.

Yeah, I HATE those vacuum things....ever since my Dad's '58 Ford!!!!! Climing a steep hill in the rain, they STOP! You have to play this "see saw" game to wipe the wind screen and keep up momentum for climbing the hill! Push the gas, the wipers STOP! Let off to let 'em wipe a bit, then repeat the process!!! GRRRRR!  My jeep will never have those things.........................

I have the vacuum wipers.
A question I have is, is it normal for the passenger side wiper to be slower than the drivers side?

One solution - Keep the original vac wipers and use a "Rain-x" type product to help keep the windsheild clear. It helps bead up the water rather than it sheeting over the glass and hindering vision.

Second solution - Keep the original vac wipers, skip the Rain-x, just take the top off, put the windshield down and use goggles. A quick wipe with your hand and everything is clear!

To each his own but I owned and drove at least six cars with vacuum wipers in the late 50's thru early 60's and the only ones that gave you the grief you described are the ones I hadn't rebuilt yet.

If plumbed correctly there is no reason for either to do better than the other. Correct plumbing is parallel. If you have them in series then the downstream wiper will be slower.
