Re 1951 M38 MC 11116
After first long drive after engine rebuild discovered a heavy transfer case oil leak. Bad at first then it settled to just oil drips. Leak stops when not driving.
Intend to keep a eye on oil levels.
Q. How, where and what tool is used to measure oil levels in transfer case?
Rgds to all.

No tool. Remove the filler plug and use your finger tip to confirm oil is at or just below the opening.
Sometimes assembly issues will increase the tendency of fluid to transfer from the tranny to the transfer case. Be sure to check both when checking oil levels.
I assume the drip is from one of the two output shaft/yokes? If either of the yokes had wear at the seal contact point they will not seal well with a new seal.

Transfer case leak
Thanks,
Is there internal seperation between tranny and transfer case?
Are oil changes done individually via both filler plugs-on tranny and transfer case sides?

Some cases had a hole that allow transfer of fluid. It can sneak thru the tranny's rear bearing and it can also get thru when the lock clip on the back of the tranny is not properly installed and causes a very small gap between the cases. They are still serviced separately. Note: do not use the modern GL5 rated EP gear oil in your tranny/transfer. The earlier GL4 is ok as is 50 to 65 weight engine oil. The GL5 oils have high sulphers which attack non ferrous bushings in the tranny (ie synchronizers).
You should review the two web sites below which have excellant T90 and D18 rebuild guides and have details of these issues.
