M 38 (1951) auxiliary power receptacle

Post by Jake266 »

Can anyone explain what the auxiliary power receptacle was used for? I'm curious as to what it powered.
Thanks.

Are you refering to the receptacle on the passenger fender? I believe its primary purpose is for jump starting other vehicles.

Didn't someone here also use it to power some christmas lights they hung on their Jeep for a parade?

It is a slave receptacle. A Nato jumper cable will plug into it so you can use it to jump another vehicle or the other vehicle can jump your jeep. Early were two pin and late were single pin. Saturn surplus sells the jumper cables and a two to one pin adapter.

Thanks and now a thermostat question

Post by Jake266 »

Thanks for enlightening me. I, for some reason, thought it was used to power lighting and such for MASH units and the likes but was not sure. Since I don't own any other military vehicles guess I don't need the cables but now I know.
Drove her back from the mechanics yesterday and she ran like a dream! Washed it down this AM (body only) and then let it idle for a bit (maybe 5-10 minutes). All of a sudden I notice the temp was at 220 with a 160 thermostat and antifreeze was showing underneath so I shut it down. The temp was fine yesterday so I'm suspecting the thermostat might have stuck. Is it better to get a NOS one than those sold as repros? Radiator was clean and clear with good air flow.
Thanks all.
UPDATE: Refilled the radiator and it took about 1 gallon mix and after running it, the temp never topped 160 and the flow was good through the radiator. Guess the thermostat stuck????

Auxiliary Power Receptacle

Post by Kendall »

If I am not mistaking, I believe what Jake is referring to in a 1951 M38 as the auxiliary power receptacle would be the receptacle on the cowl located left of the battery box and above the starter pedal and not the slave receptacle located on the right fender. Am I correct?
I am also curious what those were used for.

That one was called an auxiliary power receptacle and was there to use for things like a spot lite, siren or heater. It was connected to one of the three circuit breakers on the inboard side of the cowl battery box.

Aux power receptacle which I have labeled accessory plug.

Slave receptacle which the Army labeled Aux power receptacle here.

The standard military terminolgy used in the field and the ORD 9's for the receptacle on the fender was "Slave Receptacle"

What I was curious about was the "Aux power receptacle" on the right fender. I'm a little confused about the other power supple connector. I'm not sure where to look for that one or if I even have one of those on this vehicle. I'll have to do some looking around and see if I can locate it.
Like I have said before, I'm just learning about this vehicle and have discovered there is a lot to learn in such a small package.
Going to post a new question and try to include a pic.
