mounting radio to M38 question

Post by Jake266 »

I'm curious how to mount this radio to my jeep. Can anyone advise me the proper way to mount this thing to the vehicle? I figured it probably goes on one of the wheel wells but other than equipment mounts I don't see any bolt holes.

It was normally installed on top of the left (driver's side) wheel house since the Army had plenty of folks and supplied both a driver and a radio operator. It can alternatively be added to the right wheel house. The Black metal plate and two pieces of wood on the bottom are not used on the proper M38 installation. It would be a VRC 8, 9 or 10 installation depending on weather that RT (receiver/transmitter on the left) is an RT66, 67 or 68. These RT's cover certain frequency range IE 66 = Armor, 67 = Artillery, 68 = Infantry.

The drawings for their install are at:

This is a representative drawing and can be used as a quide but use your radio mount with it's correct wood supports for determining proper hole placement.

Rod sells the correct sized Oak supports. And we have the correct drawings you can fab your own from.

As for antenna mounts you can use the standard MP15 that nolts to the left rear corner of the jeep or you can use the less obtrusive spare tire bracket mounts AB449G mount. We have drawings for both.

Jake - here are two pics of my radios (like yours) on the same mount in my '52 M38. I used the mount to set up my hole locations in the oak supports and the fender top - Sonny

Wes and Sonny,
Thanks for the info, drawings and photos. I'll take a look at them and see what I can do to get this mounted and off the garage floor. The radio is an RT 68 and the mount is pictured in the photo.

I don't think it's an MP50:

Antenna mount on mine is an MP-50. Sonny, are you saying the mount for my RT68 is the Mt-299?

The mount used depends on the system you are installing. A VRC8, 9 or 10 would use the MT299. If you will open the large version of the installation drawing I posted for you above you will see that the MT299 is correct for A VRC8, 9 or 10.

Thanks everyone for this excellent thread. I have the ANVRC-10 set up for my M38A1 and this thread has given me the needed info for the instalation. Someone was reproducing the aerial mount that goes on the left rear. Does anyone know who that is? The next question, is there a source for some of the cables? I think I am lacking there.
Thanks,
Barry

Wes,
Thanks. The first drawing I looked at was rather small but now I have the large one so I can see it with/without my glasses!

Barry,

Fair Radio should have the cables you need. Do you have the radio power receptacle at the right door sill?

John at MWM sells the MP50 antenna mount.
