Front axle factory carrier

Post by jmercer »

I just found somewhere I can buy a used (but what looks to be in very good condition) front axle carrier for $89. Any opinions on whether or not this is a decent price? A few pics:

IF.....nothing's worn beyond servicability.....not warped or cracked or bent.....then heck yes.....good deal! For my $.02 worth I'd pull the cones and chunk them.....chances of the shims being correct is pretty slim anyway. Good luck.

Thanks for the input Jim. I was thinking along the same lines. I would put all new bearings/races on as well if I bought this. Was just wondering price wise the deal on it. Seems to be pretty good to me. Thanks,

Jim

Watching the sales boards the past 6 months the entire axle assemblies (brake drum to brake drum are going for $100 to $150 as removed.

Hi Wes,

That is indeed a good price on complete assemblies. The problem would lie in getting them up to me in Alberta. Any of the ones I have seen come up for sale have been in the US and would cost a fortune to get shipped to me. I posted ads for Calgary (where I am from) on Kijiji, and numerous other sites and have had no luck with replys. Seem to be a hard thing to come by up here for whatever reason. That is why I have resorted to buying individual parts. I don't really have any other option with mine being completely gutted. Any thoughts on the matter are appreciated.

Unfortunately very rarely. I don't often go into the states. Especially now that I am in school full time, I would not be able to make the trip down there any time in the near future. Closest thing would be relatives in Washington. If I plan a trip at some point I will be sure to let you know; I bet you have a lot of contacts for old parts.
