Questions about stock spring hangers, bushings and springs

Post by iceman7273 »

I found out i have the Rancho RS44010 springs on my m38 jeep. They are 1" higher than stock. I am going to keep the springs on the jeep for now. When i got the jeep the spring bushings were gone and it had custom Shackle brackets. I would like to at least run the stock Shackle brackets with the rancho springs. I noticed the Stock shackles have threads on them, how does this work? Does the bushing thread onto the shackle? Can anyone tell me the OD size of the stock bushing for the stock springs, so i can see if it will fit the rancho springs. And on the none shackle side of the spring was the bushings thicker or was there spacers? Any info would help....Even if i can't go with the stock shackles aftermarket will also work for now

I've never bothered to measure the stock threaded style bushings. I think you are better off leaving the aftermarket springs with their own issue bushings, hangers and pins.

If you must improvise a stock look alike setup here os what it all looks like:

If someone doesn't have one handy to measure I can dig one out tomorrow.

Great info Wes, why is the spring side threaded? The leaf it self isn't threaded is it?

No the leaf isn't threaded. Looking at the last photo the U-bolt "L" is threaded externally on both legs and the bushings "Q" are threaded internally. The spring eyes and frame bracket bushings are smooth.

I think you are smart to go stock.

Some of those after market shackles and bushings are no good. I had a cheap set on my project when I first bought it and it contributed to "bad vibrations" (death wobble).

I have a feeling that the stock springs also have less twist than the aftermarket springs and therefore reduces vibration. This is just a theory.
