Head gasket position is determined by the manufacturer. They are not done all the same. Same goes for any additional sealers that may be needed . If the instruction sheet that came with the gasket is missing just go to the manufacturer's web site for the preferred installation procedure. The torque values and sequence are in the TM 9-8015-1 pages 127 & 128 for the M38A1 engine. That manual can be downloaded for free on the downloads page.

I am in the middle of a rebuild. Sent three or four e-mails on the technical helpline to Fel-Pro about the installation of their gasket. No reply. There were no instructions on their website or in the package. Finally phoned them and they gave me the instructions. Expected more professionality from a company like Fel-Pro.

Hi Wes,
The head gasket Part# is 7543 SBX. Replaces P.# 649005 The instructions for installation were: "The side with steel sheet goes down, toward the block. The side with composite material goes toward the head. The side with steel sheet should be coated with High Tack (Permatex) or Permatex #3 or similar. The composite side should not be coated with anything (dry).

When a specific torque for a specific fastener is not listed anywhere in the manual you then refer to the standard torque chart. Many of the pre 1970 manuals did not contain one. Any of the 70 and up manuals will have one to use. You will need to ID the bolt grade, diameter and thread pitch.

Use this chart with automotive grade bolts

Use this chart with AN, NAS & MS hardware.

This chart helps with how to use the torque wrench in unusual situations.

All the above assumes that we are dealing with clean dry threads. When a manual requires a lubricant on the threads they will usually publish the torque figure but it is usually at least 20% lower then the dry torque figure.
