What is the correct winch for my m38. and were do i find one for sale? Or am i looking for a needle in a hay stack?

Be prepared to spend upwards of $3000 to equip your M38 or M38A1 with the correct set-up.

The Ramsey 105 PTO and model 50 or 50R winch are hard to find and very pricey. The Model 105 PTO tucks the winch driveshaft in real close to the engine so no modifications of the M38 or M38A1 exhaust are required. The front winch mounting frame fits the model 50 and 50R winches which are considerably narrower then the civvy Ramsey 200 series. The driveshaft is unique to the M38/M38A1 and it's single bearing support that mounts to the bell housing bolts is very hard to find.

The difference between the model 50 original equipment M38 winch and the service replacement 50R which was the original equipment M38A1 winch is the rating and cable lengths. The 50 is a 3500 lb winch and the 50R is a 5000 Lb winch.

Your price is a little under stated, expect to pay about $4000 plus for the winch head alone, that is not including any of the pto parts or driveshafts. The only hanger bearings avialable are repops that are costing $700+.

I have a 2500lbs warn atv winch. The jeep weighs roughly 3000 lbs. If i mount it on the front. Would it work for ice snow. Straight pulls? not in mud and stuff like that. I want a winch on mine for personal use. But cant afford or find the correct winch.

Upwards of $3000 equals $3000 or more. The figures depend on who is selling the winch set-up, how knowledgable he is of their values and how greedy he is. The prices can climb even higher when the buyer is too anxious or just nuts. Considering the Extremely small numbers of M38's that left Willys with winches I personally don't see the sense in spending ungodly amounts on one. For the person that wants and plans to use the utility of a winch I would believe would want a modern and easily maintained unit for a reasonable outlay of funds.

Calling someone greedy for having a high selling price on a rare item is wrong. If I wanted to sell mine I would put a price on it I feel if fair for what it is, it is up to a buyer to decide if my price is fair or not.

Looks like you want to argue this point just for the sake of an argument. I didn't call anyone greedy. I listed greed as one of the sources of rediculously high pricing. If you feel this possibility I listed affects you personally that is unfortunate. But in my book and per the civil liberties we are entitled to in this country I can call a person greedy if I feel I am justified in that determination. There is nothing wrong with that. That person may not like being called greedy but that person has the equal right to call me cynical and I would not be foolish enough to deny him that right to express his opinion.
