I received a few more parts for my winch set up today.

I received another 105a pto (which is for sale)

An original hanger bearing

And 2 original u-joints and the short drive shaft.

I still need one u-joint that goes on the winch itself, the long drive shaft, the splined u-joint and the pto shift lock.

I have all the drive shaft parts now. I however have 2 question.
1. What size nut to I need for the stud on the bell housing for the hanger bearing?
2. What size are the keys for the drive shafts?

The stud is shown as item KK in the winch drawing in 56 Ord 9 page 312 however it is listed in section 103 on page 31 and the cours (NC) threads go into the bell anf the fine (NF) go into the bracket and get the nut with matching threads. The Nut is item AH in the drawing on page 312 and is listed on page 317.

The keys are item PP in the drawing on page 313 and are listed on page 318. You should be able to get them from a Ramsey dealer using the Ramsey PN 88. Otherwise just measure the width of the slots and the the height assembled and pick them up at hardware store. Look for non-hardened steel.

Putting the drive shaft parts into an already together jeep is a major PITA, but it all went in and it all works as it should. All I am missing now is the pto shift lock.

Small world. Your model 50 is serial 12816, mine is 12819, and also stamped 5000#.

I believe that the military model 50 was stamped 3500, and the civilian model 50 was stamped 5000.

I didnt think they made a civvy ramsey 50.

That is pretty cool how ours are so close in serial number. Do you have pictures of yours?

The closest civvy Ramsey is the model 200.

The M38 came with the Ramsey 50 3500 Lb winch. The Ramser 50R 5,000 Lb winch replaced it and was used from about 52/53 on as the service replacement by the Army.

It is very interesting to find two ramsey 50 winches so close in serial number with the data plates both stamped 5000lbs.

I wonder if the plates where changed at a rebuild

Or maybe a later run of Ramsey 50 winches was done for whatever reason (military or civvy) and they just stamped the plate the same as the 50r. Maybe it was the last few before they started to produce the 50r. I wonder if Ramsey has the serial numbers anywhere and can tell when the winches where made.

People armed with blank data plates, stamp sets and a hammer can do virtually anything to a data plate. :D

A depot or factory rebuild of a Ramsey 50 which was upgraded with Ramsey 50R parts would probably get a new tag with original serial and new rating but should have had the model number upgraded as well.

One of life's many mysteries.

Mine was on a 1950 CJ3A bought in Sylvania Ohio a few miles from the Jeep Plant. Winch was on it since new.

No idea if it was installed by the plant, the dealer, or the Stickley Ave Job Shop.

Hello Keith,

Was it on there with the complete with the M38 PTO and drive shaft with correct bearing support?

Perhaps the 50 started out in life as a 3500 and evolved to a 5000 before the 50R came out?

Have you ever unearthed any Willys factory data on the 50 series winch specs in your data collection?
No idea if it was installed by the plant, the dealer, or the Stickley Ave Job Shop.
Was there any delivery paperwork with installed equipment listed with the 3A?
