venting distributor question

Post by boelcke »

I have a M38 that does not have the correct fuel pump (it is an older mb style without the vacum side). I wanted to know is it still posible to vent the distributor? If so how? I have some concern because the carb is stock and I know it needs the right vacume to work.

Just use the intake. Connect the wiper "T" to the intake where the line that originally went down to the vacuum pump was. You are simply eliminating the middle man (fuel/vac pump). Since I assume you won't be running the vacuum wipers the "T" will only support the distributor venting and the old port to the wipers can be plugged or you can just buy a 1/8" P to inverted flare bushing to connect the distributor line to the intake.

I assume I still need the special fittinig the one that is pluged then drilled with a 40 bit. I would love to just use the original fuel pump but right now funds are a bit low. That will have to be a future project. Slowly trying to get this jeep back to stock, but I still want to drive and enjoy it.

The 18"P to 3/16" female inverted flare bushing (often called a nipple or adapter nipple) is all you need. Just solder the 1/8" P side of the fitting closed and then drill a .040" hole in the solder. This is the same fitting used with the wiper "T". This method is described on Bob Westerfield's vent system web page. http://www.cj3a.info/sibling/m38vent/vent3.htm

Once you have the fitting soldered and drilled you can thread it directly into the 1/8"P threaded hole on the top side, aft end of the intake. If your intake still has the "T" there that had it's top leg plugged and the line to the vac pump is gone then use that port on the "T",
