Bolt size

Post by Bretto »

Do all 3 of these take the same bolt and thread? My top 2 are missing and I'm heading out to buy replacement nuts to weld in. And thank you Rickg for the pic.

The upper two are on page 275 of your Ord 9 SNL G-740 parts manual in section 1503 Pintle & towing attachments the 7th & 8th items down that list.

The bottom one is on page 315 in section 2101.1 Winch Assy & Drum.

Yes they are all the same size and thread pitch.

Have you downloaded your free copy of the ORD 9 SNL G-740 from our downloads page yet?

Thank you Wes! Ya I was looking at the ORD 9 SNL G-740 but I guess not hard enough. I see them now. I'll get better at looking at it. I think my pea-brain was looking for pictures.

That's a common issue with most of the ORD 9"s. You'll eventually get into the habit of looking for the sub assembly and then go to the parts list find the sub assy and read the attaching hardware which is listed below it and indented so you know it goes with the sub assy.

Bretto,

Have you been able to find 1/2-20 UNF square weld nuts in onesy-twosy quantities locally? We need four for the front bumper/lift shackle points on our M38. I found them in McMaster-Carr, 93975A420 $8.75 for 25.

NOPE! I was just going to get some hex nuts and put them in. When I checked for fitment, the shoulders would bearly fit outside the hole. I will end up just using a washer and the nuts unless someone has some square ones. Anyone?
Thanks,
Brett

How much of a hurry are you in? I'll be ordering some from McM-C very soon. I can send some of them on to you for cost + postage. They have a round pilot that fits in the hole to center the nut, and four projections on the face for weld spacing. They have the rounded corners like the originals shown in RickG's photos.

Jim,
That would be fantastic. I'm actually needing 4 like you. The previous owner knocked out all 4 of the nuts for the hanger brackets. Who knows why :? If you are still ok with the offer let me know when and I send you some money to cover cost & postage.
Thank you!

I'll need four for for my M38A1. If you're getting 25, I'll be happy to cover the cost & shipping to get 4 or 6 from you.

Looks like I'm a nut distributor now :) Or maybe just a nut!
Just to be clear, check the McMaster number I listed above and make sure it is what you want. Just enter the number in the "Find" box in the upper left of their web page and it will bring up the catalog page with an illustration and description. I should have mine in a couple days and can check the fit on the two original holes in my frame.

PM me your mail addresses and quantity needed. Postage is probably around $2, and I'll have to buy some padded mailing envelopes if I don't have any salvaged ones at home.

Ord 9 G-758 Page 268 indicated there are 8 of the WO-801661 nuts used on the M38A1 frame for the lifting rings. Four go on the front, but the rear brackets use separate 1/2-20NF nuts as part of the hardware that secures the rear bumperettes. Is the 8 a misprint which should be 4? If not, does anyone know where the other 4 WO-801661's "Nut, Grommet" are attached to the frame?

Just for reference, G-740 page 274 calls for 4 WO-801661 for the M38.

A quick trip to the garage and I can answer my own question.

M38A1
4 ea. for the front lifting brackets
4 ea. for attaching a winch frame

Actually, it calls for a total of 8 - 4 for the lifting hooks and 4 for frame side member reinforcement, front. And, just to add some confusion, in that document they are called "NUT, clinch", which to me is different than a weld nut. Clinch nuts I've seen elsewhere are mechanically crimped, or "clinched" in place and not welded. I've never encountered a "NUT, grommet" in my career before.
Are the "front frame side member reinforcements" in an M38 the same as the "winch frame attachments" in an M38A1? The reinforcements are listed in the ORD 9 but not shown in the frame illustration. The winch frame mounting bolts are 1/2-20 (4).

From pictures of M38's and looking at my M38A1 I believe that's correct. The inboard reinforcements on the front frame horns have 4 of these 1/2-20NF square nuts welded in place for securing the winch frames.

The very first post & picture on this thread depicted that and it just didn't initially register with me when I was trying to figure out how 8 were used on the A1.
