Matching fuel gauge sender to fuel gauge

I have a 24V fuel gauge sender from Kaiser Willy in our A1, it reads .6 amps empty and 30 amps full. When I called K-W and asked if their 24V fuel gauge matches those specs, they couldn't tell me. Anyone know?

Or, do you know where I can get a fuel gauge that matches the sender I have?

I already have one gauge that doesn't match the sender. It reads 200 amps empty and 0 amps full. Got it from a surplus store. Need it? Send me a pm and I'll make you a offer you can't refuse.

I'm aware that some suppliers have OE and NOS senders and matching gauges, but I don't want to spend $200 for a fuel gauge.

Or, I might just keep carrying a stick around to check the fuel level and make sure the jerry can is always full.

I am assuming you mean you are reading ohms and not amps? According to Westerman's troubleshooting guide the fuel level sending unit will read 30 ohms at full, 15 ohms at half and 0 ohms at empty, so your readings are very close. Are you sure you have the sending unit well grounded?

Yes, my mistake. Yes, the sending unit is well grounded. Thanks for the correction and the data.

A new gauge and sender from Walcks is just under $100. I've bought gauges from them and like them very well.

Jack,

You can get what you need several ways. Before buying anything download the GI gage troubleshooting Tech Bulletin at http://www.cj3a.info/sibling/milgauge/milgage.htm
and use it to test your gages and senders.

To determine which gage goes with which sender just get into the ORD 9 supply manual for your jeep and review the part numbers and their applicability.

Then order replacements by specific part number. Do not rely on what the vendor offers for correct matching information.

Thanks Wes! This month's budget went towards having a bunch of really scary wiring repaired that we found when the instrument panel came off to replace the fuel gauge. So, I'll be relying on a stick and the odometer to keep track of fuel level for a while longer. But, at least now there's good wire to hook the gauge to when I get it.

I also replaced the batteries (51R) and cables while we were in there.
