M38A1 - Rear Diff flaw or repair?

Post by STXM38A1 »

The Dana 44 rear diff that came on the vehicle is currently removed and stipped down. While getting the numbers off of it to finish the M38A1 survey, I noticed what looks like either a welded repair, or possibly a casting flaw. Or maybe this is quite normal? Feedback appreciated.

Its definitely ground down. I'd say it was a casting booger they ground down. If there was a crack in that area, I dont think it would have gone along that rib.

Thanks Brett. Just trying to be sure it wasn't abused and cracked before doing any more work.

I guess when you're churning out dana 44 rear axle pumpkins by the thousands you're not just real particular about how it looks.....here's about as close a picture I have of mine from about the same perspective as your second picture......
