M170 Tailgate chain

Does anyone know the trick to spreading upper tailgate chain link on a m170?

Also how to reinstall/ close upper link after new chain canvas is installed? Is there a special tool?

If you are referring to the looped link with two staggered ends the easiest is to heat it with a torch and open it up then push the canvas cover as far towards the hook as you can and heat it again red hot and squeeze it closed with a pair of pliers.
