Another "is this right" question

I'm finishing up my rear axle service. I noticed something strange today that may or may not be a problem, I just don't have any experience with 4WD vehicles. The rear axle housing is not on the vehicle and is up on jack stands. The question is when I turn the yoke flange by hand, only the driver side axle turns. I would have thought that both axle shafts should be turning. Is this the way it should work or do I have a problem? Thanks.

No problem @ all just a bit more drag on one side & the spider or differential gears are doing what they are supposed to do....

4WD or not a conventional rear axle will behave that way. Your front axle will do the same thing. Lockers and limited slips will turn both sides.

Yep normal. But you should hold the drivers side from turning while turning the yoke and make sure the passenger rotates. If not you have other issues.

By keeping one side from moving you are utilizing the spider gear set in the differential and if there are any serious anomalies they will usually show up as noise.

When you said "Axle Service" what services did you actually perform on the axle?

Wes, my axle service followed section 215 in TM9-8012. I replaced the differential cover gasket and changed the oil, replaced the inner axle oil seals, new bearings, brake grease protector gaskets and axle shaft grease retainer, new brakes, drums and all the brake hardware. I did nothing inside the differential, everything looked great.

As suggested I held the driver side and turned the yoke, the passenger side did turn so it looks like everything is OK. I do appreciate everyones help. I read all the sources I have before I post a question but many times the forum members can clarify things in a way the books can't. It has been a big help.

Your axle pinion shaft seal showed no evidence of leakage?
