Steering knuckle

Post by Wiltshireboy »

I have just found oil drips on the floor coming from the 4 bolts under the nearside knuckle. it looks like it is coming from bottom part of the ball joint. the oil is very black. Do I monitor it or is it a sign that urgent work is required?

Nuisance leaks are allowed. When the leak becomes a consumption issue (drops lube level below safe level) before periodic servicing is due then fix it.

Als be sure which type fluid. Is it the gear oil used in your axle's differential or the lube from the knuckle itself?

Gear oil leaking there is a problem that needs to be investigated.

Thanks Wes,
I am not sure what type of oil it is that is leaking. I havent serviced the knuckle, I have only done the wheel bearing 2 yrs ago. I thought it was supposed to be grease in the knuckle.
I will check the level in the diff.

Use your nose! Hypoid gear oil has a very distinct smell.
