can someone be kind enough to post pics of the correct placement of the skid plate on an m38a1?. thxs

Mine is off and I don't have a picture prior to removal.
Take a look at page 130 of TM 9-8014. (available for download) Figure 58 shows the skid plate and surrounding items fairly well.
