M38A1 timing marks

Post by kwai »

I need to set the timing on my M38A1 but am not sure how to interpret the timing pointer and timing marks on my engine. The timing pointer has 2 arrows (pointers) and the pully has 2 notches about 1" apart.

Which pointers and notches do I align to get to 5 BTDC to set the timing?

You have a pair of unmatched parts there. One should have a single mark and one should have two marks. The most common are the two marks or lines on the front engine timing cover or bolt on tab with a single hole or notch in the rim of the crank pulley.

As you look down over the top of the radiator the line mark more towards the passenger side of the jeep is the "0" degree mark or TDC. The line mark more towards the driver's side is the "5" degree before TDC mark.

Rotate the engine by hand with the spark plugs removed. When #1 piston starts blowing air out the spark plug hole stop rotating the engine and insert a thin rod or screw driver into the #1 plug hole. Now lowly continue rotating the engine until you feel the rod or screw driver reach the top of it's travel. Stop the instant that happens. One of those holes in your pulley should be very close to aligning with the "0" or TDC mark on the cover.

Now remove the distributor cover. Is the rotor pointing to #1 spark plug wire position? If so then you have found your timing marks.
