parking brake

Post by Spc_Byrd »

Will someone please tell me how to install the parking brake on a cj-2a or 3a or m38? I have been searching for months on how to do this with no luck! I have the backing plate on with pads. I need to know how to install the drum and linkage and so on. If anyone can help me on this it would be great!! Thanks

The m38 maintenance manual can be downloaded here for free. Go to the downloads section and it will tell you what you need to get it done.

You should read through both the transfer case final assembly instructions and the parking brake section. One of the four rear output shaft bolts is used with the brake and will need to be resealed when you install it.

If you do not yet have these manuals in paper then at least download them in PDF and use them till you find or print paper copies.

Chassis & running gear manual: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... it&lid=125

These rebuild guides should help as well:

I beg to differ with you on that. It shows a partial cutaway view in Fig. 118 where you can see some of the internals, but not all of them, and the text also fails to mention the horizontal link and spring.

The Powertrain/Body/Frame manual has a couple of figures in the transfer case section that show the parking brake assembly (Figs. 46 & 47), but brakes themselves are not covered in that manual, being a maintenance item rather than overhaul. But other than that photo, there isn't much in there about the parking brake.

Rick Stiver's transfer case rebuilding guide that Wes linked (willystech) has a pretty decent photo of the assembly in section D3a - just note that you are looking at the whole thing upside down on the bench rather than right side up on the vehicle.

This page http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/BrakeCable.html seems to have the best info I've managed to find so far.

I've become intimately familiar with all these documents on this subject in the last week or two since disassembling mine and discovering that almost all the internals of the parking brake are missing :( , thus initiating my search to find out exactly what I was missing and what replacement parts are available. Anyone know where I can get a cam lever, link, and link spring?
