Maiden Voyage M170

Post by rdsar2k »

When working on this I decided that I wouldn't put in the brake and clutch pedals until I was done. I know that I would be too tempted to take it for a spin. Couldn't help myself this weekend and I put em in and went for a ride. Took my daughter first then my wife. My wife was teary eyed. She said she just didn't think it would turn out as well as it did. No leaks or issues to speak of. I did notice the carberator top gasket was wet to I tweeked the float a little lower. The rear oil pan bolts have oil on them and need to be tightened or have some sealant put on the threads (the main seals are tight!). Not being a Willys guy before this I had no idea what to expect. No syncro on first is a bear! Is there a way to get into first when you need to downshift on a hill without grinding?
When I started out I had my hand on the shifter in second when going down hill waiting for the second gear pop out and sure enough it forcefully tried to pop out but I held it in; it didn't do it again but I am leary of it. Prior to the ride I had rebuilt it with small parts kit and a gasket kit with new main bearings. I inspected the gears and they seemed in decent shape though second did have some wear on the teeth. New pilot bearing. It shifts smoothly and quietly. I used this site to guide me on the rebuild

Overall it drove straight, brakes grabbed well, and ran smoothly. Just ansy about the second gear pop out.

Learn the proper way to "Double clutch" to get into first while rolling.

Popping out means:

1-Synchro rings worn,
2-Gear bearing worn
3-Shift fork not traveling enough.
4-Tranny to bell housing or bell housing to engine bolts not tight.

Second Gear

I will get the parts and rebuild my spare tranny and transfer. This time I will get the Hermtheoverdriveguy kit that is catered to this. Probably do a swap if this is persistant. Never double clutched but I've now read an article so I'm an expert. This outta be good.
