Looking to replace the parking brake cable on my 51 M38

Post by Smittykid »

I have purchased a replacement parking brake cable from MidWest Military. I've tried to do a forum search on how to replace it with no luck. I don't want to screw anything up so I figured I better ask the experts. The original cable is still on the Jeep. Thanks, Smitty

Not a difficult task as repairs go. In the parts manual ORD 9 SNL G-740, in the downloads section of this website, page 235 has a diagram of the parking brake system. Start at the parking brake drum, undo the clevis and cable clamps, there's one next to the trasmission and pull the cable forward into the engine compartment. The cable is held on the end of the partking brake handle with a "T" so you should be able to undo it by pushing it backward through the firewall. Reverse process to install.

I've got MWM's p-brake cable also, it's a well made and
smooth operating part.
Now's a good time to remove and repair/clean your
p-brake handle and bracket assy while you're at it.

There is also a clamp in the engine compartment. Don't pull the cable into the engine compartment until that clamp is removed and you have disconnected the cable at the handle. Do the same with the new one going in. Don't clamp until you have it in the correct position and connected at both ends. This will insure you do not stress/kink the cable in any one direction.

Replacing the inner cable only is also an option and the stranded cable and swages are available at most hardware and fencing outlets.

Thanks guys ! I printed off page 235 of the parts manual. Hope to get at it today or tomorrow. If I have any other questions-like Arnold said, "I'll be back !" Smitty
