Rebuilding my M38A1, have questions

Post by ChiGuy82 »

Ok guys,
Its the new year and I have been putting this build off for awhile and its time for me to finish this. I will have many questions coming up but for right now, does anyone know where I can find the most complete bolt kit to replace all the old bolts in my 1952 Willys?? Should I go with the stainless steel bolts or cadmium plated steel bolts, if there is such a kit? Lastly, what bolt face is the most used but the people of the willys forum and why?

Thank you very much for all your help
Mike

I only used stainless for non-structural stuff on my M38. The stainless at the Deot is a lot cheesier than quality stuff like you might find at a Marine supply place. Just my 2 cents.

Do you have the old hardware? If so, why not clean it up and reuse? I would focus my attention on the rear of that tub. You are going to be busy cutting and welding but it actaully looks real good.

A metal finishing shop (like an anodizer) can refinish your old hardware and new SEMS hardware is available from Midwest Military and other fastener supply houses for a correct period look.

I always thought the correct period look was to have several coats in various shades of OD. I just cleaned up all my old bolts and painted them. Probably not a show winner but looks great.
