M38 fender pics
I found an excellent image of the drivers fender (thanks Wes) and surprisingly most of all my holes match according to it. Any one have have one similar of the pass side? Also, are there supposed to be 2 holes on the top of the fender for 2 wire clips for the wire that goes to the BO light. I think I see 2. I have 2 for a total of 7 on the surface of the fender. 3 for BO unit, 2 for the hood hold down and hopefully 2 for the wire.

From Ryan's reference guide, the unidentified holes in that picture are listed as follows:
8 - unknown
9 - unkown, usually plugged
10 - unkown
11 - manufacturer's jig
12 - manufacturer's jig
Bretto: if you can get to a copy of this guide, there's a photo on page 150 identifying the holes in the passenger fender. The holes in the top of both fenders are shown too. And yes, you should have 7 in the top of the driver's fender (2 wire clips).

Rick,
That's a late right fender. Early does not have the indent lower rear for the power plant heater kit.
Here's the rest of my M38 fender photos

It was not a serialized change by part number in the ORD parts manuals.
It was a drawing change only.
The Dec 52 Powerplant Heater Kit instructions address the late vs early fenders and how to modify the early fenders. It implies that the change occurs around Jan 52 (about MC44XXX).

fender
Rick,
Just FYI; your jeep was one of the first 102 unit run s/n 51887-51988 assembled at the beginning of the transition from open to closed bellhousing/late vent system witht the late starter/generator/bellhousing/vent lines.
My # 51898 also has the late fender but I doubt this is related to the 102 unit pilot run.
After the 102 unit run - with yours nearly last, Willys went back to manufacturing the "early" setups until the full transition to the later venting systems at #53262.
