PTO Winch cable
I need to put cable on my winch, is there anything specific I should be looking for? I'll use metal cable, not synthetic or rope.

Bummer,,, the manual I have does not list a model 190 L or R.
It is a civilian model info book.
Here's what I did find;
Ramsey Model
200 R , uses 150 feet 5/16" cable
200 L , "
246 L , "
J-8 L , uses 150 feet 3/8" cable
J 10 L , uses 150 feet 7/16" cable
101 R, uses 100 feet 5/16" cable
If you don't get a solid answer reference the 190 L, my guess is that you'd be safe using 5/16 inch cable. It is the smallest cable listed. You'll probably not do any damage to your winch before the cable lets go. Cable is cheap, winch parts are not.

Don,
I believe we determined in an earlier post he has a 200 series civvy winch.

I'm sorry, it is a 200L. Did I mention how bad my memory is after having brain cancer ten years ago?

Is there a reason it has to be 150 ft? As opposed to 100?

There is no reason why you can't put 100 feet of cable on your winch. I find it is the easiest place to store an extra 50 feet of cable in case that tree you need to hook too is just past 100 feet. If you use a snatch block to double your pulling power (actually only 85% increase) then with 150 feet you can hook to something 75 feet away. Plus the winch looks better if it's full of cable. The down side of a full winch is you can too easily 'stack' your cable up on one side on a long pull and run off the side of the drum. THIS IS BAD if you keep running, which is easy, as you are in the driver's seat and can't see the drum.
Here is a link to a site with a lot of good info on winches.

ok, and last winch question! Any advise on what I should do as far as a fairlead? I don't know what was original, and the last thing I want to do is put a big, shiny, modern chrome one that looks completely out of place.

This is the original. The M38 and the M38A1 use all the same winch kit parts.
This is a simple fab it yourself item.
try using all my reference photos in my photo album. They are there for all the folks to use and will answer half the questions folks post here.

Also there is a very good exploded view of the fairlead on this site. Go to; "Navigation" top of this page, click on "Downloads", then click on "Winches", then open "Ramsey model 50 winch".

There is nothing I can find that is similar, so it's a total fabrication job. Does anyone have recommendations for what to get for parts? And where to go?
