Winch Fairlead mount

Post by Deadguy »

I need to install something, and the closer I can get to the M38A1 military fairlead, the better. Unless I luck out and someone has an old one for sale (and I assume they are pretty rare), I need to fabricate one. Anyone have any tips on where I can get parts, or a suitable standin?

the hardest part to find is the front piece of the frame that is 1/4"x2"x2" "T"stock.

You have the winch with it's mounting holes and the M38A1 frame with it's mounting holes so all that is left is to copy the very clear photos already posted and fabricate the angle and flat stock to fill that space between the winch and the frame. Since your winch drum is a civvy 200 series you will have to adjust the 50 military series mounting frame to the dimensions of your 200 series drum. You haven't posted any drawings of your civvy 200 drum dimensions and mounting hole dimensions/locations so we really can't offer any info on what size stock you will need to adapt the civvy winch drum to your M38A1 frame.

I'll post pics when I get the M38A1 back from the glass shop. Basically, extensions were fabricated to bolt the winch to the frame. It's in more or less the same position as the military version, it just don't have the full box mount all the way around it. It looks like I'll be fabricating the front fairlead. The military version also looks like it has towing shackles on the front on either side of the fairlead, something else I'll need to add.

The front and rear lifting shackles were stock on all factory M38A1's. John at Midwest sells all those parts as well.
