Engine rebuild tag question - now with picture added

Post by jbjeeps »

I just picked up a complete m38a1 rolling chassis with an MD engine. On the left side of the engine block is a rebuild tag with the following on it:

38324
Lot 47
030
010
010

There are no other marks, words or symbols on the tag.

I understand that the 030, 010, 010 refers to piston and crank sizes.

Anyone know what the 38324 Lot 47 refers to?

Here's a picture of the chassis and some of the other stuff that came home with it.

My rebuild tag was formatted differently and the engine was rebuilt at Ft Ord. The five digit number on mine is the serial number of the engine prefaced by MD and was a replacement engine. If your MD number is still visible on the front of the engine you might see it is the same number. The tag also had another 5 digit number that I interpret as the date it was rebuilt. But no indication of piston or journal sizes. And upon tearing down I found it had been bored to .60 over and journals were ground.

Thanks for your reply Mike. But, my rebuild tag number and MD number are different.

Number is probably a work order number and the lot # identifies that engine with the work order number's group of engines.

I think you're right Wes. I was hoping the 5 digit number might be a location code that someone would recognize. It'd be nice to know where the work was done. Not essential, but having some additional history is always interesting.
