M38 cost

Repainting my 51 m38 and saw white lettering under the old paint.
"THIS VEHICLE COST $2004.00"
Is this common for the price to be under the hood?[/b]

I found 2,004.00 stenciled on the inside of the windshield frame in front of the driver. This is also on a 1951 M38.

Those prices will also vary depending on which contract the jeep was purchased. This was a common practice in the military to show folks how much the equipment cost the tax payer and hoping this would elicit a little more careful handling by the GI operators.

During my 22 years in the military I saw many enlisted folks have charges withheld from their pay for the cost of equipment damaged or lost due to their negligence. Never saw a Pilot have to pay for an aircraft lost due to his negligence though!!!
