On the seam that runs down the inside center of the hood on my M38 is a hole. Is it suposed to be there and if it was what was it for????

Is it like this?

If so, then mine has it too. I did think it was maybe for some type of hood stay (when working on the engine). Not sure if it's original, or one of Bubba's finest moments. It has caused a small split in the hood (perpendicular to the hood seam), so it's definitely a weak point.

My 51 has the same hole with the support rod still intact. I will try to post a pic some time for you. It has a hole on the passenger side radiator support that holds the hinge side with a small cotter pin and washer to keep it from falling out.

The support rod has a base coat of army green under a over sprayed USMC green.

I do not know for sure if it was a factory item or not.

My '51 doesn't have the hole, but it has a short piece
of metal welded (not too expertly) about 2 inches
long in about the place the hole is in the photo. It
matches the rest of the seam. I guess someone
tore the support rod out at some time.

my jeep had both a hard top and cowl heater at some time in its past. Interesting....

How do you post pictures in this forum? I took a couple of snap shots of it and have not figured out how to post them.[/img]

Brian I have opened an album for you here on this web site so you can post photos at a smaller size. Try to keep them below 150K files.

dimensions?

Post by jimm »

Brian (or anyone else):

Could you supply dimensions for that hood rod? diameter, length of each short leg, overall length, length from one end to the bend, angle of the bend? I've got an original Willys hardtop and a hood with a hole, looks like now I need a rod!

I could also use dimensions for the radiator brace rod. I know it's 5/16" diameter, but that's all.

Thanks,
Jim

Give me a week or so and I should have time to photo and dimension the rod. I will post the research here.

Check out my picture album for rod length pictures. I am currently on page 11 and my user name is Brian. Wasn't sure if I should post the pictures on this thread.

Thanks a lot! I've scratched my head several times trying
to figure out what that hole in the radiator hood support was
for. My previous post on this mentioned the repaired part of
the hood that apparantly had been broken. The hole in the
radiator area looks like it was wrenched also. What did the
rod rest on when the hood was closed?
