Gas tank repair

I've got a question about a gas tank repair on an m38a-1 tank. The retainer ring around the small hole where the fuel sender is installed......was it originally spot welded to the tank......brazed to the tank.....or just how was this held in place? Has anyone ever tried to reattach this ring to the tank and if so...how'd you do it? Finally.....any comments on brazing holes closed in a tank? Thanks for any and all comments.

Blast it clean and solder! Wash out old gas first however. There are lots of gas tank repair thread info. including tank lining opinions! John
