Torque Specifications

Post by KHH37435 »

I've looked in the TM's but didn't find torque specifications for re-assembling the transfer case for my M38. Did I just overlook them or can someone point me to where these are published / tabulated? Thanks.

Torque specs

According to Chiltons, the CJ3 series (and M38, same basic specs), this document should help you.

Some items like the military transfer shifter pivot bolt won't be in there.

The basic rule is if the manual list no specific torque for a fastener then use a standard torques table. Also always assume torques are for clean dry threads. If a fastener must be lubed before torqueing the manual will say that. The CJ service manual SM-1002 has a good chart of specific torques.

There are also 4 pages of Gwiz stuff on this album page:

Here's a few good online charts:

Thanks for your replys. Is it recommended to put thread sealant on the bolts that penetrate in to the transfer case body to prevent oil leaks thru the bolts?

Yes and you should consider the thread sealant as a lubricant and reduce the torque the recommended percentage.

Thanks. I assume I don't need to pack the roller bearings with grease since they're exposed to the gear oil in the case.

Most questions are answered in the Rick Stiver's Tranny and Transfer O/H guides.
