What is suppose to be on 51 m38 title

Post by jeeptruckatv »

I have a 51 Willys M38 that needs a title. I can get one from the BMV but I'm not sure what is suppose to be on it for make, model, body type, etc. I have the serial number plate.

What your DMV uses on the title is what you have to deal with. Ask them. The preferred information you want on your title is:
Make-Willys
Model-MC
SN-MCXXXXX
Body Type-SUV or Truck

Many DMV's require 7 to 15 digit serials called VIN numbers and many DMV's will simply add zero's to your serial but some will issue you a state devised VIN. The only place to get a correct answer to your question is your state's DMV office.

Really depends, now mine is canadian so I registered it as a ford m38, for some reason the could not do m38cdn, and they just used the serial number for the vin. but as Wes said it all changes from place to place.

Wes is dead on as always. It all depends on your state. Mine was purchased at a military surplus auction back in 1963. In Pa. it was titled as a reconstructed vehicle and the title lists the vehicle as a 1963 sedan. They ground off the original serial numbers and attached a Special Number Plate to the original data plate. So bottom line is that every state does it differently. If you go on line to the DMV for your state you may get some good information.
